Katy Tour Canceled

But first let me say what a nice start to my day with breakfast on the patio with Johnny and Phyllis.

Soon after breakfast I got the call from Road Scholar. There has been too much flooding along the trail to continue the tour. I had called last week about these very concerns as Phyllis had been sending me alerts about storms, tornadoes and flooding in the area, and specifically along the trail. I spoke with the trip organizer/leader at great length and she assured me that they DO NOT cancel tours. So I decided, since I did have my flight tickets by now, to attend the tour with visits with J & P on each end of the tour dates. Well, here we are and the tour is canceled.

Of course I am disappointed not to do the tour, but am happy for the few days of visiting, and am grateful not to have had to do battle with Road Scholar to pay for my early flight home. Phew!

We had a good day with a nice long walk on Grant’s Trail to the Puzzle Wharehouse.

There are thousands of puzzles in this place — jigsaw as well as other types of puzzles, and I had to find one to take home to Susan!

The one on the wall has 24000 (thousand) pieces. I passed on that one for Susan.

After the arduous job of puzzle hunting, we needed the stop at famous Ted Drewes for an energizing custard.

This place has the BEST custard, and is always busy. The ordering lines can get very long, but they are quick to serve it up.

Ted Drewes has been around a log time — and is on the Historic Route 66!

Johnny was happy that I (yes I) had suggested this stop today. They don’t get here often now that they live here. When they were visiting in town this would be almost their first stop, with more in the days that followed.

We got home to do just enough relaxing and resting before meeting up with Phyllis’ brother Bob for dinner. A wonderful dinner, and a most enjoyable visit and conversation with Bob.

Got to Saint Louis

Possibly the worst flying/airport experience I have ever had. Tremendous turbulence as we began entry to STL made me almost dizzy,  and slightly nauseous from my head bobbing back and forth, side to side. The pilot had warned us it was coming and that we should not worry or be frightened by it. I took his word and did not get scared — just jarred around a lot. I did not like it. Finally we landed.

Announcement came over the speaker as we disembarked. The message was that our baggage would be a little late to claim as the ramp was closed due to lightning. At least WE had made it to the ground safely.

Little did any of us know that it would be HOURS before our luggage would get to us. Johnny and Phyllis were in the waiting parking lot as we sent texts back and forth about all the lightning (baggage guy said they had counted 70 strikes!!!), and they (J & P) were enjoying the show.

While waiting I walked around (and around) the baggage claim level and found a few things. There is a USO office (I have never considered that to be a recruiting office) with a cadre of young recruits (I asked one and she said yes they are) waiting at attention. The sarge (or whoever) was ordering them about: “pick up your pack and put it to your left side”,”stand up straight”, “walk in single file up these steps”.

Our waiting time got longer and longer as the the lightning storm continued. I kept walking for those hours. The roof started leaking.

And I kept walking around and texting any updates to J&P. Finally (at least 2 hours later) we were told that the baggage was now coming, but our carousel was not working so we had to go to the ‘oversize bags’ carousel.

Not only was this a much smaller “carousel”, there were 300 bags from Delta that would be unloaded before ours (United) came!! The crowd could not be contained to stand back while the workers tried to unload each bag one by one, so it was a bit of chaos.

FINALLY, my bag emerged from the tunnel and I could get out of the STL airport!

This terrible experience — the turbulence (we had 2 other lighter ones earlier in the flight) and the airport baggage adventure — have given me pause about whether I want to do anymore flying. Those things coupled with the inconvenience, the tight seating, the minimal service and long time in a plane make me feel that my flight home might just be my last one!!! My body was achey after the few hours of flying, I had some kind of headache (like jet lag when there should not be jet lag) that lasted through the evening, and just overall did not feel tip top.

Backyard Airport

The idea of having an airport nearly in your backyard has NOT been appealing to us. However, the less than ten minute drive for Susan to drop me off for my 6:00 a.m. flight to Saint Louis was, shall we say, oh so convenient.

Not having used this airport yet, I was (as I was born to do) worrying about the logistics of everything. All went smoothly, and whether it was the early morning flight or the newness of the airport, there were NO lines anywhere (except the coffee line). A breeze.
The lounge is very nice.

The coffee/tea/crumpet part was at the end of the liquor bar.

A nice relaxing area to enjoy your treat

A fireplace if you are there in a cold month.

The flight departed on time and we were soon above cloudy Seattle in search of some sun.

And in three short hours we were approaching Denver, where I would get a second flight to STL. The worry was the weather forecast for STL — storms, flooding (flood gates in downtown being closed for rising river), tornadoes (Susan had given me tips and training of what to do in the event of a tornado — drop flat to the ground and hold tight onto something like the stop sight post. She all but demonstrated this for me in front of the airport departure door).

I had almost a three hour layover so took my daily walk up and down the concourse of my loading gate. That long walk called for a stop at the chocolate store. ;’-)

Johnny and Phyllis would pick me up at the STL airport for the next legs of my trip: a few nights with the two of them; seven days on the KATY TRAIL, biking 5 of those days; a few more nights with Johnny & Phyllis before heading home.

Fwd: Two Days of Mothers Day ;’-)

On Saturday Sarah, Jeremy and family took us for a Mothers Day adventure to Old Town Sacramento. There we took the old train ride along the Sacramento River and then for ice cream.

After ice cream we toured the magnificent (and huge) Railroad Museum. This is the month and year of 150 years since the railroad was built. It is quite a big thing here and they were setting up the 'round house' for the festivities. This museum is incredible with many displays and a docent to give you an extensive tour with more information than my brain could hold. I need to (and want to) return to here for more!

And THEN they took us for lunch. We had our own little room and a very good meal.

Sunday — actual Mother's Day — the was more! Jeremy fixed all of us a delightful breakfast, they gave us gifts, and then Sarah and the Grands took us on a bike ride to find geocache treasure. We finished that off with — yep, another ice cream treat ;'-)

Now we are heading home and I have managed, with a great deal of frustration to complete blogging about this trip. Unless I come up with a good solution to my blogging issues, I may well stop blogging although there. But I will continue to work on a solution as I do like doing it.

Home to Elk Grove and more...

To get me caught up here I am posting the beginning of this trip. Driving from home to Elk Grove is a long way! We spent the first night in Medford Oregon, then made a stop in Redding California before getting to Sarah’s in Elk Grove.

We needed some out of the seat time anyway, so using the excuse to visit a “world famous” fly shop was fine with me. ;-0. After perusing the shop and purchasing a fishing license, we found our way to a hiking trail. Possibly the worst trail we have ever been on. Dry grass and weeds lined a dry and dusty trail. We thought, by the map, that we would be hiking along a river (or creek) but that was not to be.

We did get to the creek and Susan was at least able to dream about fishing.

The most interesting thing was the size of the pine cones. My foot is there for scale.

We got to Sarah’s that late afternoon and simply relaxed around the house and made plans for the next day. Kaitlyn had a school function the next day. Susan and I would take Jaydon and Lucy on a bike adventure.

We drove to Davis to ride the 12 mile trail around and through UC Davis. It was quite wonderful. The route is at times on a low traffic road with nice markings and wide shoulder, and  UC has made a big part of a parking lot for bikes only. Davis is a true bicycling town League of American Bicyclists awards it as the best biking town in the country.  All schools, from elementary through college had tons of bikes parked by them, and it seemed that everyone biked to wherever they needed to be. I will easily go back to this town to ride again.

During the ride we stopped at In and Out Burgers for lunch, but the big highlight was the ice cream at Davis Creamery after the ride ;’-)

Oceanside to Oceanside

I continue to move backwards in this post ;’-).

The day before we rode through Camp Pendleton Susan and I rode the couple of miles from Jack & Judy’s house to the San Luis River trailhead. We took the ten mile trail to the town of O’Side and had lunch at the Harbor.

Here we go — leaving from their house.

The trail was empty on this weekday so we had it all to ourselves.

Apparently it floods here.

I got to see my first live Road Runner. In the past (somewhere) have seen a blur of what was said to be one, but today I saw the actual bird (beep beep)

Lunch was — what else by the seaside —- fish and chips at the harbor.

We have enjoyed watching the pelicans glide in a line overhead but I have not been close enough to get a good photo. This will have to do.
