RAINY WEEKEND IN MILLERSYLVANIA

How nice that we had that semi-stellar weather (rain only in the late evening) for our Whidbey Island outing. Our plan for a camping trip down near Olympia for some bike riding on the Chehalis Western Trail was made months ago. Surely our chances were good for a good weather weekend by then! Not to be however. Instead, we would have rain every day of the outing until the day of our departure.

Not only rain — stormy weather with buckets of heavy rain.

Dang the rain and man the camps, a few of us made the trek anyway. We would miss Shelly & Lizette who decided that beginning (and ending) a campout in pouring rain would not be fun in their tent. A few others planned to join us.

Susan and I arrived at camp in the early afternoon on Wednesday and, since it was too early to check in, drove around to scout out things. We wanted to find how to get to the trail. We discovered that riding our bikes to a trailhead was not a good idea on winding, hilly roads with no bike lane or even a shoulder.

Wednesday had quite nice weather which changed drastically in the night and into Thursday. Between several downpours we got out for a walk at least, and water was everywhere.

Susan wants to know what happened since yesterday when we were sitting out by our campsite enjoying the sun and warm weather.

It is good weather for some things — like future frogs…

Our walk took us to the lake — “Deep Lake”— where Susan could go fishing if she chooses.

Arriving back at our campsite we were so happy that WE were not camping in a tent and could enjoy a hot beverage in our cozy RV/Van.

Our scouting trip on Wednesday did prove worthwhile as we found the best place to begin a ride, if weather allows that on one of these days, is in Tenino and we would drive there to the trailhead. When we arrived there Susan spoke with a couple who were about to go for a ride and learned they are local trail ambassadors and had maps!

Vickie and Maizie arrived  late on Thursday after a grueling drive that took longer than usual.

Maridee and Laura made the effort to get here on Thursday evening, but finding all the tent campsites FLOODED, they turned around and went back home. A very disappointing development for all of us as we had hoped for good riding on the trail and good times together. We must try again for another time and maybe another place.

It rained hard through most of Thursday night, Friday morning it seemed to have rained itself out. Many of the big lake sized puddles in our RV paved area had dried up or at least receded quite a bit. But that was relatively brief as the rain came and went throughout the day. Not a good day to take a ride or much else for outdoor fun ;’-(.

Susan and I drove out for a few hours of exploring another lake and nearby town.

There are boat rentals here should Susan get an urge to get on the lake for some fishing.

A few interesting things by the General Store.

We have stopped in town to pick up lunch and dinner for today and here is where I might just have good enough wifi to post this. I will try that now as tomorrow might just bring a day for a bike ride — the reason we came here!
